AUSGANG

Becky and I shared many stories about the difficulties of learning German. My favorite story is about Becky and Paul riding a train along the Rhine. Trying to make sure they would get off at the right station Becky volunteered to read the name of every station along the way.

They came to the first station and the sign next to their train said “Ausgang”. Fine, but then the sign at the next station also said “Ausgang” and Becky was surprised that two localities so close to each other would use the same name. But this was a foreign country with strange customs. However, when the sign at the third stop still read “Ausgang” Becky decided it was time to find a literal translation: EXIT ! That actually made sense, and it was good for many laughs ever since.
