Apple Blossom Azalea

She will always be Coach Becky to us.  I remember meeting her when my son, Jaylen went on a recruiting visit at Mason in 2017.  I was secretly hoping he would pick Mason since I had graduated from there and loved my time at the school.  Meeting her solidified that this was the place for him.  I felt immediately at ease with her and knew he was in the best possible hands.

She put together an amazing group of student athletes.  She created something magical and watching them develop as athletes was amazing.  Her ability to break down Jaylen’s throwing form frame by frame was one of the main reason he was able to have so much success.  She was always there to encourage and support him.  Her determination to be there for Jaylen all the way through his last throws as Eastern Prelims this year was truly remarkable.  We will be forever grateful.

Seeing each thrower’s growth as young adults over the next 5 years was just as impressive.  I attribute that to her calm and confident leadership.  Jaylen absolutely loved her.  The bond they formed has forever shaped him as a person.  She genuinely cared about what was going on in his life just as much as she did about his throwing.  As a mom, it was so comforting to know that she was always there for him.  I was glad to be able to tell her often throughout these last 5-6 years how much I appreciated her.

She was there for me too.  During meets that I couldn’t travel to, she would always text me an update or send me a videos or pictures of the podiums or awards.  I am so grateful!  She even checked in on me anytime she knew I was having personal issues.

She was, in a word, remarkable.  We will miss her.  Please know that her legacy will continue live on in our family.  These words can’t possibly fully express my gratitude for her but I hope they can provide some kind of comfort to your family.  Thanks to you all for sharing her with us.

Sincerely,
Laura Simmons
